What is the best type of conditioning for a wrestler? Even though I am no longer competitive, I still grapple with this question. The selective information I find seems mixing up and contradictory at times.

Even though my competitory days are in all likelihood behind me, I have continued to be fascinated in wrestling technique and in wrestling conditioning. Any combat athlete, including wrestlers, may become tired and sore from following a high rep weight training program. If you have no energy left for practice, what’s the point? Pavel concludes, “If they go to low rep, heavy, non-exhaustive training–three sets of three or five sets of five–they would not get sore.”

Strength training will have to never interfere with your wrestling practice. If exercise itself makes you tired and fatigued that’s okay. You can’t exercise your wrestling achievements well if you’re sore from weight training. You can’t shoot good takedowns if you’re tired and sore.

If wrestling exercise itself makes you tired and fatigued that’s okay. However, your strength training shouldn’t. Strength training is not for conditioning. You must get a great deal of conditioning for the duration of wrestling exercise from drilling, live wrestling, calisthenics, etc.

Strength training is also not a way for you to prove how tough you are. Save it for the mat. Nobody cares how much you may bench press if you walk out and get pinned. Lift heavy weights, but keep the overall volume of strength training low.

According to the book A Season on the Mat: Dan Gable and the Pursuit of Perfection, after losing his final collegiate match (after 117 straight victories at ISU), “For the next two years, Gable worked out three times a day, eight hours of running and lifting and hard wrestling, endeavoring for Olympic perfection.” What did Gable do after he won the gold medal in the 1972 Olympics in Munich? According to the book, “The day after winning a gold medal in Munich, he ran four miles.”

A year prior to that Gable had responded to winning in the same manner. The morning following the 1971 World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, Dan Gable was out running, already focusing on his next challenge.

Ben Peterson and his brother John were Olympic teammates of Dan in 1972. They many times worked out with Dan. 5Great fitness program

Just FYI Best Buy is currently giving away UFC Undisputed 2010 free when you buy UFC Personal Trainer. I took advantage of that deal.

I wouldn’t call UFC Personal Trainer a game. It’s a fitness system. This is not a gimmick to get MMA fans to open their wallets. The program was developed and certified by the National Academy of Sports Medicine based on MMA training techniques. I started the 30 day strength training program and had an excellent workout. I’m a sergeant in the USMC and I’ve had numerous physical training sessions. The exercises I performed in UFC Trainer were very familiar as they are the same basic exercises Marines use to stay in shape. Pushups, squats, and lunges are proven and tested exercises. If you are already fit I would suggest picking up some light weight dumbbells for the standing upper body workouts such as upright rows and the Arnold press.

The program features various modes to help you get in shape. “Workout mode” has several pre-made routines for you to choose from. Each routine has a short description including what areas it will improve and estimated number of calories burned. You can also make your own workout routine. There is also a “quick workout” mode which I have not tried but the instruction manual implies you pick a target goal and quick workout automatically starts up a workout to improve that area. “Programs” are really where I think this game shines. Here you pick a workout program with a specific goal such as strength, cutting weight, and cardio. The program is for a specific duration as well such as 30 or 60 days.

The “Activities” are simply fun UFC inspired mini-games for you to play. The speed bag is about timing and rhythm, the tire flip is basically a squat where you explode upwards from the squat position, you can hit the mitts and freestyle on the heavy bag as well.

There are systems in place to help track your progress as well. You input your age, height, and weight and your BMR can be calculated. There are graphs to track your progress by calories burned, weight lost, muscle’s exercised, etc. You can even take pictures of yourself to keep track of your body’s fitness transformation. Consistently doing the workout programs unlocks rewards and achievements such as doing 100 upper body workouts.

If you are under the impression that this game will make you into a fighter, you will be disappointed. If you want to be a fighter you need to find a martial arts gym with a focus on both ground work and stand-up. What this game will do for you, is provide you with a fun and motivating way to transform your body. If you do these exercises and have a consistent routine I’m fully confident you will get in better shape.

Note: I didn’t have any problem with the game freezing but some of the other reviews have indicated that the problem was already fixed.

For some of those still having issues:
I’ve noticed a few things in the past week since I bought the game. First it is extremely important that your entire body appears green within the octagon in the corner. If you get in plan position to do push-ups and your face is yellow or red, you are too close to the sensor. Floor exercises seem to be giving people the most trouble. I suggest you make sure your kinect is calibrated properly and give yourself enough room.

Secondly, timing is important when doing the exercises. You have to wait for the green arrow to at least begin to appear before changing position. There is also an audible bleep sound that helps you with the timing. For example When doing push-ups go down, hear the bleep, and then go up. You will then hear another bleep you can go back down. If you do them too fast or out of rhythm the exercise will not register. It actually helps you develop proper form and rhythm. Exercises like push-ups should be done in a steady controlled manner to get the most out of them.

To get a little extra burn a few 5 minute sessions of heavybag and mitt work. I got about 10 pauses today in my workout hopefully they fix this it auto pauses even if you are entirely green and standing still. If anyone was worried about back problems and doing ground routines this is very forgiving with technique found this out when I was getting tired. I wish they made the pushups register like you do jumprope it would be much better for fast pushups. Nothing worse than non registering reps while you are really tired.

Updated 7/1/11 Calorie burning estimator needs some tuning. 600+ strikes 60,000+ points on heavybag in 5 minutes gave 13-53 calories burned. But 3 minutes of very light much slower paced mitt work of maybe 40 strikes gave 99-300+ calories burned.

Updated!6/29/11 Just tried an hour of heavybag, speedbag, tire flips and mitt work. I think it’s all FIXED!!! Now this is how it was intended to be! I’m ONLINE and no freezes the last hour. Do pushups according to the pace of the machine I know some of you out there are pushup and situp machines you are limited by the kinect device itself from keeping up with you. That being said I think this is now better than fitness evolved and the best entertaining workout kinect title to date. It’s a MUST for any UFC fan. Hope this review helps I’m totally enjoying this Title now!

Not a fan of a ring girl giving demands on the heavybag, speedbag or tire flips if I wanna hear a woman complaining I’ll go deal with the old lady ;) .

Don’t know if Amazon is slowing down but this deserves a 4 to 5 star now that this bug is fixed also it’s showing I only put 1 star for fun this is 5 stars on both. Amazon needs to fix that.

Game locks up to frequently to get a good steady cardio going. It does not track many exercises accurately pushups or situps etc.. I found it tracked jumping jacks the best also noticed while hitting the heavybag if you perform a Thai clinch it tracks your hands as well while you throw knees so it looks like a triple hit… I feel the activation of particular strikes need serious tuning.

I performed 29-30 pushups it counted 13 not before locking up the whole xbox. These lockups last 10 or more seconds at times. It doesn’t just lock the game up it also may do a never ending loop of whatever sound was on. Do it at the machines pace otherwise it won’t count even if you can bang out 100 pushups in 1 minute it’s too fast for the kinect not UFC trainers fault.

2An Exercise in Frustration

I’m a big fan of the UFC and a big fan of working out, so this title seemed like a natural fit for me. I’ve successfully completed P90X and GSP’s excellent RushFit, so I have reference as to what a good workout routine is and I entered UFC Trainer with certain expectations, neither of which is fully met with this title, which certainly feels like a rough draft of a game that could’ve used 3 months of additional development time. At first, the sheer variety of workout options seems rather nice and varied. The variety is quickly wasted upon hearing your trainer repeat phrase after phrase, such as, “let’s get the body ready for a great workout,” followed 3 seconds later by “let’s get the body ready for a great workout.” Much more variety in the dialogue is a no brainer. How the developers let this slide is surprisingly Bush League game development since it really bites into the experience.

More variety in warm-up exercises would have been welcome, such as having the CPU randomly select 5 warm up moves from a pool of warm-up exercises instead of having to do the same ones before every routine. The option to skip warm-up or cooldown would have been nice.

During a routine you are prompted to input how heavy a weight you would like to use for the upcoming exercise… but are never told what that exercise is. So how do I know how much weight to grab (since the weight has to be input, to help figure calorie burn) – I’ll use different weight for triceps than lunges, for example. Again, the user experience seems to be an afterthought

The biggest sin this title commits is in its shoddy body movement recognition during ‘gameplay.’ I can’t remember how many clean, strict, push ups I would hammer out only to see the game wasn’t registering but a fraction of them. Jumping jacks also gave the game a hard time to see and register, so the frustration quickly builds as you are losing your point bonuses and sometimes even fail an exercise outright since the goal numbers aren’t being met. This problem rears its ugly head again in sparring, where sharp and crisp jabs and crosses frequently are met with a buzzer announcing you failed to throw the strike properly.

Graphics are decent, nothing remarkable, background music is derivative hard guitars trying to emulate the UFC feel. Sound effects are ridiculous, similar to 80′s kung-fu movies, like when a trainer throws a knee strike you hear a whoosh! Every step the trainer takes on the mat sounds way more dramatic than it should be.

Overall, I got some decent workouts in, but the game’s faults were so glaring that I became jaded with it after 2 weeks. Even Xbox Achievement hounds should steer clear of this sweaty turd. In closing, this title suffers greatly from its lack of polish. Perhaps next year’s edition will clear up the blemishes this is covered in. For a mere $20 more, I recommend George St. Pierre’s RushFit dvd set. Very varied, very demanding, very fun – and produces great results.

3Great Fun…party over…

I have been playing this game now for a month, so my initial response to it has alter somewhat. First things first, I agree with the other reviews commenting on the fun of this game and its party nature. It features mini games similar to that of a carnival and you get to really use your full body to interact with these games. After completion you win tickets (those no-good tokens that could buy you a hair pin at a real carnival) which can be traded in for costumes and the like. The game even boasts with its own fortune teller, which just like its real life counterpart, makes you feel like you’ve been ripped off afterwards.

In essence, this is a party/group game. Trying it alone I find myself quickly rushing through the games and ejecting the game. With friends it becomes fun and gameplay time is lengthened.

CONS
- not one player; must be played in groups/parties
- too few games
- replay value of games quickly diminishes the more you play, quicker than similar games
- the “harder” levels are pretty hard to reach

PROS
- menus are easy to navigate
- setup is clear and easy to follow and one can jump into the action quickly
- 2-player is really easy and fun: opt in or out any time during play and the Kinect senses the second person easily
- space requirements are decent and you don’t have to stand all the way back for the Kinect to pick you up

My real gripe with this is after more than a month of playing it is that it has kinda reached its purpose now. We hardly remember having this game, unless friends come over. Friends from previous times are not too eager playing it again, so that indicated to me it’s fun first time around and then it loses its appeal. At this point I’ll argue for it to be discounted before it really reaches its value. Don’t trade this game in though, as you never know when along the road you might have some family/friends over interested in a little carnie fun.

2Decent game, but not for younger kids.

I will be honest: I am not much of a gamer and neither is my 5 year old. However, we enjoyed some of the Kinect games and he had requested something new to play. We read through the descriptions together and settled on this one.

First impression: decent graphics and colorful, fun atmosphere. It really has a sort of carnival feel to it.

Game format: the multitude of games was nice because there are a lot of different challenges. There is a lot to see and explore. Again, the carnival atmosphere is really shining through here.

Playing: as some have mentioned, there did seem to be a bit of lag with the Kinect control. They didn’t always recognize certain movements and my son had some trouble with it. There is a bit of a learning curve here and it is steeper than Kinect sports or Adventures. Even I was challenged at times.

And another thing: Some of the language after doing poorly at a game is discouraging and inappropriate for a younger child who might be easily discouraged. While an adult might find this as a challenge to their skills, a child might see this as a put-down and not want to play anymore.

Final assessment: As there aren’t a lot of Kinect games out there yet, I would reluctantly recommend this for older children and above. That being said, I would look for it used or on sale rather than paying $40-$50. For us, it wasn’t worth the full price.

4Fun for all ages! Short learning curve!

This game is fun and just about anyone can pick up and play with a short learning curve. The games range from a skeeball game, a dart game, a strength game, a fried dough catching, and dancing like a monkey, plus many more. The games are cute and fun, challenging but not too hard to master. Prizes are tickets which can be redeemed for outfits and pets for your avatar. The top win in each game gets an exclusive prize which is also for your avatar. I like this, in the Wii one you simply win virtual prizes but with the clothes (shoes, shirts, hats, outfits, pets, etc.) you can dress your avatar and have a little more fun with the prizes.

The Kinect works well with this game. Whenever it did not immediately recognize me, I simply jumped once and it would see me right away. Some games may take a long time to recognize you, but this is NOT one of them. My boyfriend and I enjoyed this game for hours!

The only gripe I may have is replayability (once I beat a game how much more do I really want to keep playing that game, over and over?), and I wish there were more games. I’m hoping they will release some downloadable content for this game, which I suspect they will.

If you liked Carnival Games for Wii, you will LOVE Carnival Games: Monkey See Monkey Do for the Kinect! It’s a solid purchase – fun for one or a group of people, and will keep you entertained for hours.

This is nothing more than a USB A-B (5pin) cable that ships with many products these days, like digital cameras. You don’t need to pay the extra money for someone to call it a “charge link”. You can find a suitable cable for much less money.

Someone said that it was slightly longer than the one that came with the PS3. I guess that depends on which PS3 as for mine it is over three times the length of the included cable. This allows me to plug in a sixaxis mid game and to continue playing from my couch.

Short version…

This a good quality cable, that is long enough to charge a controller while playing a game. What more can you say?

The Wii Zapper is a gun peripheral that allows the user to insert a Wii Remote and Nunchuk, both sold separately, into either end and play a compatible game. The control stick on the Nunchuk controls player motion (on stages that grant player movement), while aiming the Wii Zapper moves the targeting reticule on the screen. The Zapper comes with Link’s Crossbow Training, which helps to acquaint the player with the Zapper in a shooting gallery style game. Link’s Crossbow Training holds three game styles: target shooting, defender and ranger.

Features:

  • Target Shooting: In target-shooting rounds, players shoot bull’s-eyes as they pop up on the screen. In early stages, targets are stationary. 5Link’s Crossbow Training is Great; Zapper Ergonomics are OK!

The combination of the Zapper and Link’s Crossbow Training is well worth the $20 I paid. The Zapper (which is only a plastic shell for the Wiimote and the Nunchuck) is very sturdy and amazingly well-conceived. The instructions are quite clear on how to insert the Wiimote and the Nunchuck into the Zapper.

Of course the ergonomics of the Zapper are odd, with the trigger (the Wiimote B button) being forward vs to the rear like a rifle or shotgun trigger. However, it’s a compromise that Nintendo decided it had to make based on its tests on prototypes. That, and the fact that the infrared component of the Wiimote must be to the front.

The bundled game, “Link’s Crossbow Training” is multifaceted and exactly what’s needed to give the player practice using the Zapper. AND, the game is a lot of fun all by itself.

The bottom line on this is that the combo of the Zapper plus the game Link’s Crossbow Training is a must-have (at least for me) and worth the price. Highly recommended.

I was skeptical when i saw the box. “We don’t need to turn the wii-motes into a gun. How good can the pack-in be?” But then I had second thoughts and bought it. We’ve been playing it all night. I was a Duck Hunt fan and the rail shooting levels are fantastic – like the first time you played Mrs. PacMan after being a PacMan fan but so much better. There’s a mix of scrolling, rail and 1st person shooting levels set in the Twilight Princess world that can be played in order or on their own. If you get a Wii for the holidays, pick this up as well. I can tell there’s no point in even taking the wii-mote out of the zapper. The family will be playing this just about everyday, despite our having about a dozen other Wii titles. My 3 year old was delighted when she beat my high score. In my defense it would have been higher but I hit a live chicken. My 8 year old informed me “Mom! You can’t shoot LIVE things!!!” Who knew? It was so much fun blasting the fruit balloons…. and the skeletons…. I’d defend my record, but my husband and brother have been playing for the last four hours and I can’t get near it. Well worth the $20 – if they’d sold the game alone I would have paid more.

3Great Game included but the Zapper is not too confortable

I been playing with the Zapper for a few days (Umbrella and Link’s Crossbow) and the first thing I noticed is that the right hand goes in front and the left hand in the back of the Zapper. For most of us that are right handed this can be awkward as with any type of gun/shotgun peripheral I feel compelled to have my right hand in the back and the left hand in front (If you don’t believe me, pretend that you are holding a shotgun and see where your arms end up). I’m no expert but this just seems to feel more natural. I found the only decent way to play with the Zapper is to use the nunchuck detached from the Zapper (held with your left hand) leaving a bulky unused piece of plastic hitting your right forearm. This makes me wonder if I should have bought just a plain wii gun.

I found that the Link game was a lot fun and that’s why I gave the Zapper a higher rating. The Zapper alone would have probably gotten 2 stars at most. If you don’t care for Link Crossbow training, you might want to try other alternatives.

Myth and Occult Mixed with Contemporary Japan
Megami Tensei was in the first place based on the novel series Digital Devil Story by Aya Nishitani. A major franchise in the RPG genre, MegaTen games take place in the contemporary or near-future Japan, mixing occult and cyberpunk elements. The games feature mythological references from multiple mythologies, and the player is many times asked to make moral or philosophical selections that affect the game’s storyline and ending.

The silent male protagonist who represents the player in Persona 4 attends Yasogami High School with Chie, Yosuke, and Yukiko. His entire personality and name is decisive and portrayed by the player’s in-game activenesses and decisions. He wields two-handed sword type weapons, but different from Persona 3, he doesn’t use substitute weapons.

Mysterious Murders Abound
Persona 4 takes place in a rural town named Inaba where mysterious murders occur whenever there is fog after heavy rain. The town has a television channel that airs only at midnight called Mayonaka TV, for the duration of which it is said that one may see their “other half” while staring at the screen. After hearing when it comes to a recent unsolved murder, a lot of characters realize that they had witnessed the murder victim while observing Mayonaka TV.

The protagonist discovers that for the duration of midnight when the channel is on, his body may phase into his television set, using the set as a gateway to another world infested with shadows. Mayonaka TV and the town murders seem so connected that it’s possible that the victims may in fact victims of Mayonaka TV itself. The characters determine to solve the mysterious murders by exploring the concealed world of Mayonaka TV.

Brand-New Yet Familiar game play
Persona 4′s game play and style are similar to the standard Persona 3. Players intimate with Persona 3 will quickly recognize the social links and dungeon crawling game play, as well as the engine itself. The battles also have a good deal of similarities, such as the One More system, All-out attack, and the AI controlled help characters.

However, different from Persona 3, characters may be set to take commands from the player, new glasses concede characters to see through the heavy mist inside Mayonaka TV, and tarot cards may be shattered to summon the characters’ respective Persona. 5An Overall Great Experience.

For many of you who enjoy the Megaten series, you may already be well aware of this series. Two years ago, Persona 3 broke onto the PS2, creating an influx of newcomers and old school gamers alike. It provided a unique battle system, an intriguing dark story, a plethora amount of characters, and overall a great experience. Persona 4 is a standalone game, bringing many of the features, settings, and atmosphere from P3.

You are a silent protagonist who transfers into a rural area. Soon enough, you find something mysterious and dangerous. On one rainy night, you look into a television. Voices begin to ring, the storm seems to enrage, and the television flickers on and off. Reaching into the t.v, you are sucked into a whole new dimension.

Interesting, is it not? You’ll find many mysteries held within the storyline. Unlike the city life in P3, you’re in a very small town named Inaba.

The battle system holds its true colors. Although this time around, there are some tweaks. In P3, you were unable to control your allies, as they were under the influence of the AI. All you could really do was give them certain commands. This time around though, you are able to control their every move. These actions include using items, attacking, and defending. The all-out-attack is still implemented and the battle mechanics overall are ALL the same.

For those who have played P3, Tartartus was a large dungeon with many different themes and atmospheres. Instead of that, the dungeons in this game are spread out. Giving a more variety in gameplay. Each dungeon is uniquely themed based on the storyline. One night, you may be going through a steamy spa, the next you may going through an abandoned mall.

Many of the things you find in P3 and, to an extent P2, are all found in Persona 4. If you love the Persona series or you are a newcomer, pick this up, it’s well worth your money.

(Side Note: For those who pre-ordered this game, the art-book is quite large (100 pages) and provides a few major spoilers. It’s highly recommended you wait to look at it later. Although, the presentation of the package is wonderful, giving both the artbook and soundtrack is awesome).

5The Girlfriend Review

Sometimes, being a good girlfriend means sitting on the couch and watching him play a game or playing a game together. I’m a moderate gamer, the new controls are generally more complicated than I’m willing to commit to. He is a hard core gamer. Some games are easier to watch than others, and some are easier to play. This review is not for the hard core gamer. This review if for the girlfriend (or boyfriend, who am I to judge?) that sits on the couch and watches.

Persona 4 is a great girlfriend game. We jokingly refer to it as “time to watch the anime”. It’s a single player game, so my involvement is limited to “don’t say that…say this” or “I don’t think that’s the right answer….” The characters are interesting and the game is very story driven. With the exception of battle days, which don’t happen all that often, the game is actually almost entirely story. I won’t get into the plot, but if you’re a fan of anime, you will enjoy this game. The game play is intuitive and you will rarely find yourself at a loss wondering what you should do next. The Persona fusing is the most complicated thing about the game, and I usually check the laundry or load the dishwasher when it comes to that point in the game. There are many games that I have sat through in defeated resignation, this is not the case with Persona 4. I’d find myself telling him that it’s been 3 days, when are “we” going to play the game again! I hate to admit it, but I think I had a little crush on Rise! Great characters, great story, a great time overall.

5my new favorite gaming franchise.

For years I’ve been playing the same, mediocre RPGs. The names change, but nothing else seems to.

The Shin Megami Tensei series, on the other hand, has been making widely original content from the beginning and hasn’t looked back. I sit here and look at Persona 4, and it’s predecessor, Persona 3, and I’m just amazed at the amount of content thrown into these games. The games are so deep, I’ve found myself easily playing 90+ hours, just on the first playthrough. However, I’ll be starting my next playthrough soon, because I hadn’t even begun to scratch the surface through that 90 hour journey.

Social Links: One of the main things that makes the Persona series so spectacular is it’s bizarre popularity system. You make friends. Have serious (sometimes intimate) relationships. Take tests. Become more popular if you get high scores on your tests. Get more friends. And these friendships are merely the tipping point of the game. These Social Links may seem to be pointless at first, even if they do provide some deep stories and hilarious commentary, however, once you cross over to the “other world”, you’ll find that these mean more to you than you think. Now, remember a few minutes back, when I said it took my 90 hours to finish 1 game? I didn’t even get half of the Social Links. There are a freakin ton.

Because you’re ranked high socially with so and so, you’re able to form stronger and more meaningful Personas, which in turn, will be the main decider in any battle you face. If you have a terrible Persona when facing a random battle, you’re dead for sure. And then, just to add a bit more to the mix, as if P4 doesn’t want to be like it’s father, P3 (which would be fine, if it were), it decides to ALSO make a difference in your own party members. Now, if you’re incredibly close to Chie personally, she’ll take deadly hits for you; knock out enemies you’re struggling with; heal your status ailments. And not only that, but unlike P3, you now have control of all 4 party members. Which makes things a tad easier :)

And by now, if you’re still reading this, it probably sounds like these social links are the biggest amount of story this game will get. That’s pretty incorrect, actually. These social links are only tiny side plots in this beautiful adventure. The main plot / theme of this game goes beyond the Social Links, and really makes a social commentary on our own world and society today.

Then add the insanely odd style (the art, the colors, the backgrounds, the music) and it somehow manages to work perfectly with the path the own game goes down. Pure genius all around. AND it’s on the ps2. It’s 40 bucks and it’s better than almost any game out so far on the new generation consoles. Come on RPG fans. You need to get into this underrated series already.

5Exactly What I Was Looking For

I have a PSP 3000 and eventually got tired of the stack of UMD cases in the corner of my desk toppling over, so I went out looking for the best possible storage solution. With this case, I found exactly what I was looking for.

This case holds 8 UMD discs and is well-constructed. It is a little smaller than the PSP itself and both sides open using a double-articulated hinge. Perhaps the best part is that the case uses magnets to hold the discs in place and to hold itself closed. No more struggling with latches or practically breaking the disc to get it out of a cheaper case that is a little too snug. This case is simple perfection and I highly recommend it.

5Great Improvement

I have the older psp umd case-built like a little tank but a bit of a pain to snap in or take out the umd’s. This new case is fantastic to me. No where near as bulky & heavy as the old one. I absolutely love the fact that the case holds the umds by magnet. How simple & easy it is now, no more snappin in & rippen out! A total breeze. Holds 8 umds like the old one & both sides open opposite, like an accordion, “u get used to it” I recommend. Nice case for a decent price & easy as pie to use. Go for it & protect your umds!

5Great case for UMD’s

I usually prefer first party accessories for my gaming hardware, and Sony yet again proves that to be sound wisdom. The case is constructed very, very well. The games are held securely in place and are well protected. It’s designed in such a way that it takes up only as much space as is necessary, which is good for me because I like to keep all of my PSP stuff in one small bag.

Those of us not sold on the ridiculous proposition of a PSPgo (at least, at its price point with no UMD transfer) will be pleased with this carrying case.

2Role Paying – Yes. A Driving Simulator – Somewhat. A Game to Buy – Probably NOT

Lets remember I’m reviewing a game – although some might suggest it is a driving simulator.

I’ve been a hard core Formula One fan since the 1960s.

I’ve also been playing Gran Turismo (Prologue) for more than a year on my PS3. A game I both like and find quite frustrating.

The first thing to realize is this game is geared toward a very hard core F1 fan, who wants to role play and engage in the strategy of a race weekend or season. IF you are looking for most of the nuances of being a F1 driver OTHER THAN DRIVING – this may be your game. This is NOT a hard core driving simulator. There is a great deal to the game that has nothing to do with driving and a great deal to do with how you interact with the press, how you set up your car, how you manage pit stops, how you deal with changing weather, etc. So if you want to live the life of a F1 prospect – then this is your game! For most gamers – the races are excessively long (even at the shortest settings) and I doubt many will want to pretend to be a F1 driver.

This game is certainly meant to be played as a role player, you have to be smart about your interviews with the press, smart about set-up and smart about pit-stops. Your goal is to progress to being a top level driver which also includes wise contract negotiations.

The actual driving/physics are mediocre — which means that most game players will find the physics reasonably friendly. You can turn off ABS braking and the only result you will find is that you can not steer if your brakes are locked. Traction control can be turned off and the only problem you’ll encounter is that you can’t mash the accelerator if you are in a Low speed turn. But there is no real simulation – the physics are quite simplistic but that does not mean easy!

I’ve been playing the game with all these aids off and I can say this game offers very little regarding the true physics of a race car. I’ve taught performance driving, using real cars, for over 20 years. Nevertheless you still have to be very accurate with your steering, pick your braking points well and modulate your throttle in low speed turns. The game is still a challenge. To get a good lap you’ll have to put in a lot of time but just to be clear – the physics are simplistic and far from entirely accurate.

This game offers none of the subtitles of driving a real car at the limit. I don’t necessary mean that as a criticism. Very few gamers would want a true simulation. Cars, driven at their true limits, are very difficult to control. However —- if you want a true DRIVING simulation – this game offers little approaching that lofty goal!

I think the appeal of this game is limited to true F1 fans. You certainly have to be exact in your driving and you also have to deal with weather, pit stops, tire choices, when to change an engine, etc. It will take a lot of effort to advance your career and complete the game. But the races are excessively long (yet mimic a true F1 race). A major problem with the game is you’ll be unaware of any opponent behind you because the mirrors don’t work. Overall, this game strikes me as a lonely and often dull (abet technical) form of competition.

I suggest you pass on this game unless you like the idea of role playing as an F1 driver.

Your wiser choice MAY be the forthcoming Gran Turismo 5 (due November 24, 2010)

Other comments:

1.) The graphics are either excellent (for still frames) but only good (in the actual game play) when viewed on a 1080p monitor connected to the PS3 via an HDMI cable

2.) The multi-player (on-line) is OK but not great. You can set up custom races as short as 3 laps and restrict what driving aids can be used. You can also turn off collision so you are freed from other people ramming you off the track. But it is all a bit confusing to use and it may be difficult for someone to find a race you set up. Nevertheless – it has more options than Gran Turismo Prologue and thus has to be viewed as a minor step up. I hope the upcoming Gran Turismo 5 will have a far better on-line lobby. Overall you will find few racers competing on-line.

3.) The weather effects are nothing less than stunning. When it rains — well —– it seems like it is really raining! Graphics fans will love this.

4.) There is no manual/user guide available within the game (and the tiny brochure included in the packaging just covers the bare basics). For a game so immersed in the details of Formula One it amazes me there is no in-game manual. I know the sport extremely well but will everyone?

5.) Driving Aids: The map of the race course that you can (optionally) display is too short to be of any real help and the racing line, another option, is too short and hard to see to be really helpful. So I doubt anyone will find much help from those aids. But Beginners will find considerable comfort with the game’s other aids such as automatic braking, ABS and traction control (all of which are banned in the real world of F1).

6.) As previously noted, one of the biggest problems with the game is that the mirrors don’t work. You won’t have any sense of the cars behind you except for the maps. That really lessens your sense of competition and hurts the game-play. More often than not your greatest threats come from behind. This is a major oversight in the game and often makes a race seem lonely and quite dull.

7.) One major advantage of this game, for hard core F1 fans, is you will gain a very realistic perspective of the tracks. As a game, I can’t say I enjoy it very much but I keep playing it because I get a very real sense of the tracks and that heightens my enjoyment when a race is televised

2F1 2010 – Falls Flat on Promises And More. Very Disappointed. Save Your Money.

This review was written November 18th, based on a copy of the game I purchased on September 22nd. Almost 2 full months to think about the game and analyze it properly.

I am a massive F1 fan. Massive. I’ve been following it since the times of Senna x Prost despite my young age. I’ve been through GP2/GP3/GP4, F1 1998 World GP, GPL, F1 2000, F1 2002, F1 99-02 Challenge, F1 2006 CE, certain rFactor mods, GTR 2 mods, a brief iRacing stint, and the latest F1 2010. I have been driving sims for almost a decade as well so I feel I can talk about this game properly. I’ll try to be direct too.

Presentation:
It’s very nice to have the Paddock system, in the first few weeks it still seems cool but to be honest, the novelty wears off once you realize how much time is wasted when you have to keep transitioning back to that one area, dealing with loading screens. Despite the setbacks I’ll give kudos to Codemasters here, was a nice touch.

Graphics:
At first they seem very awesome, no doubt about it. The cars have a nice resolution, the circuits look pretty, the stands are “alive,” the pitcrew is properly detailed. However the helmets are incredibly low resolution compared to the cars, and their mapping just baffles me. The rain looks very good on the track and so does the spray over the front tires from the cockpit view.

The lighting of the game has a filter that makes colors less lively which may not be noticeable by several people, but I feel it takes a little bit away from what it could have been. On TV the cars may look one way but live there’s real vibrant colors and they’re very reflective but not poorly done like F1 2006. F1 2010 gets that reflection the best out of F1 games I’ve seen; talking more about reflections, they have a funny effect because their frames per second is at a lesser rate than the game, so they stutter by.

Audio:
Absolutely love the sound of the cars. F1 doesn’t have the v12s or v10s of not long ago but the v8s don’t sound that bad and this game does a great job in that aspect. Overall the audio is good, we don’t have an annoying announcer (i.e. James Allen) bugging us and we do have some pit radio messages every now and then – sometimes they’re fine, sometimes slightly off. It’s funny when it’s off, to be honest, so I’ll let that one slide :P . Lastly, on audio, you may be disappointed not to see your name in the list of possible names with audio, but the name is basically only mentioned once on the interview. I picked Colin just for laughs.

Gameplay:
Here’s the thing: Codemasters hyped up this game a lot, review sites and shows didn’t play enough to really tell us anything, so when the community got a hold of the game it was shocked. Car behavior on the dry was ok, on a wet track it was problematic. Too much grip with wet tires on, and just a generally super forgiving gameplay. Unless you touched the kerbs! They were terribly modeled and sometimes you can just ride them (when you shouldn’t as in real life you’d probably damage the undertray an even screw up the gears, as we’ve seen with Sebastian Vettel) and sometimes you can’t even look at them and they’ll throw you off. I think Monza was an example of poor kerbs. Oh, you don’t need TC even in the rain. It’s incredibly tough to lose the rear, wheelspin is completely off.
Anyway, it’s understandable this game isn’t made to be a sim but Codies could have been straightforward instead of beating around the bush with their and Anthony Davidson’s crap (there’s a reason he hasn’t been on a F1 grid for several years).
Closing statement on driving: It mostly makes sense to drive the cars so if you can remember where kerbs give you problems you’ll be fine.

Live The Life:
Simply put, you don’t. It’s a very shallow experience that will be summed up with you not caring for the press and actually hating your agent :P .

Now, to point out the bad stuff…

CONS:
- TERRIBLE AI rubber banding. Qualifying lap times are completely unreal. Race times are unreal. The AI has predetermined laptimes for every session, the only one who has to worry about setting a certain time around the track is you. You may overtake Vettel on your hotlap but he may still have the faster laptime. Also, do not be surprised to see a lower team car jumping several positions during pitstops or later in the race as they set fastest time. This game is terrible with that. Don’t be surprised to see the HRT set the fastest lap of the race, or to see a computer-controlled car simply appear infront of you after warping 100m behind you. The AI has set times for each sector so they’ll warp if these are outside a certain range.
- Fuel Simulation and Tire Wear. Another aspect of the game that pretty much only applies to the player. It is incredible how this issue also got through testing, or it didn’t but was ignored. To be brief: The player suffers from both but the AI doesn’t.
- Track accuracy is poor. Codemasters outsourced the work on the tracks, and when CAD data was available the tracks came out just fine – except Silverstone that has the MotoGP layout. MOTOGP LAYOUT for the F1 TRACK. Also, how the hell does Monaco have a BANKED TUNNEL?! EMBARASSING. Oh yeah, it also rains inside the tunnel!
- Terrible replay. Awful camera, very short. Just terrible.
- The AI is very good on areas where they fail in many games, like T1 of the first lap. The AI moves about to find the proper line instead of just line-up to be overtaken. They put proper fights for position too. Unfortunately Codemasters screwed up everywhere else. They got the toughest part done but completely botched the easy ones! Careful when passing someone on a blue flag, they may BRAKE on you.
- Career is a shame. You could win on Legend your 1st season with HRT and you’ll not be offered a contract by a team higher than midfield. It’s tough to point out the main problem in that sentence, that you can WIN on Legend with the HRT, or that a top team will ignore the fact you are amazing. Oh, and when you move teams, don’t expect to replace the worst performing driver. If you go to McLaren and Lewis beats Button by 50 points, expect Lewis to get the axe.
- Pit Stop bugs still happen despite the patch. Seems to be give and take on luck. That means you could be P1, make a stop, and come out P20. Great way of making a person angry.
- Force Feedback WEAKER after the patch. It was already poor to begin with…
- FPS stutter
- You may set laps in quali faster than some AI but during the race the AI will pull laps 5-10s faster than they did in quali, out of nowhere. This relates to point #1 but it’s just so frustrating it deserves another mention.
- Only accurate tracks and best cars in the game are those with CAD data.
- Tracks with poor kerbs (Jump!) and modeling in general, like the exit of Parabolica in Monza. It’s like they completely botched some polys while making the track and didn’t bother fixing them. Also, how can they put the MotoGP layout for Silverstone in a F1 game?

This game should be avoided, to sum it up. Even casual racers will be upset with the faults the game has. A F1 fan may try putting up with them – like me – but there’s always a limit. I will not be buying another Codemasters game, I hadn’t in several years for a reason. I most likely will skip F1 2011 as well.

This game is embarrassing, we wanted a proper console F1 game so bad but we got this instead. Do yourself a favor and resist the urge, this doesn’t deserve a purchase unless it’s on the bargain bin, and even then only if you’re an F1 fan.

If you are even a little into F1 you will love this game! I initially used the D-pad for this game, but decided to buy a wheel just for it. Man that was worth it! I bought the Logitech Driving Force GT and it works great. The graphics are better then GT5 and the sound is amazing! My favorite thing to do is probably even just hot laps.

2Great Trilogy…. Until the Last Hour or So

Be warned, this review contains some spoilers so read at your own risk. This is also a bit long winded; I apologize but, as a fan, I invested quite a bit of time in the series. Time for me to give back what they took from me.

My Real Rating: 4.5/5 until the last hour or so, at which it becomes 2/5

Game reviews can often be subjective so this review is coming from someone primarily with an RPG background who, in terms of game play, enjoyed the first game better than the second. The second wasn’t terrible in terms of story but it was much less of an RPG and more of a shooter. The first thing I noticed about Mass Effect 3 is that BioWare gave us a game that gives us the best of both worlds and should be recognized for that. There are also some things here and there that I either loved or hated but these were not things that impacted the overall experience so I exclude them.

Some Observations
=================

1. Some people complain about graphics but that isn’t as much as an issue for me. I am a hard line gamer who still pulls out the classics from the 80s and 90s and can generally forgive not-as-good graphics for a good story or game that is simply fun to play. Mass Effect 3 is, for the most part, both. That being said, the graphics weren’t terrible and I feel that this is really a non-issue.

2. The re-design of the Normandy is great! I love the lounge (reminds me of a line from Mass Effect 2 when Shepard told Jacob that the next Normandy gets a lounge). Nice touch.

3. The writing was generally good. There were some places where I felt it was lacking but I’m saving my anger to discuss the ending. Also, character development is good, especially across the three titles; this is insanely difficult to accomplish in a game trilogy so kudos for that. There were several points in the game where a scene elicited an emotional reaction from me. In the last hour, that emotion was sheer terror that all this character development had been for nothing (see below).

4. As I mentioned, many of the RPG elements that were taken out of the second title were brought back but vastly improved. One such feature was weapon modding. While it didn’t bother me like it did some people, I must still admit that modding in the first game could become rather tedious, especially for someone who feels the need to collect everything (not a good idea in the first game).

In this game, for example, suppose you mod a series of weapons with, say, a Rifle Scope I. If you pick up or purchase a Rifle Scope II, all weapons with the earlier mod are automatically updated as well as your inventory.

From the start, you can choose to upgrade weapons you are using to better weapons right away. Moreover, weapons are no longer constrained to a particular class (i,e, infiltrator, soldier, vanguard, etc) so you can enter a combat situation with the weapons that are best suited to the task. There are some weight limits that you should observe when carrying weapons that depend on class, however.

Overall, the game play is fantastic.

5. Halleluiah, planet scanning is gone! It has returned in some form but one does not need to spend large chunks of time collecting resources to upgrade weapons and ship components. Planet scanning is mainly used to collect war assets in Reaper controlled territory but even this can still get a bit tedious at times.

6. I am not a huge fan of multiplayer games, cooperative or not, so I do not feel like I am in a position to adequately critique it.

Comments on the Story
=====================

The story was great. I was on the edge of my seat digging it, that is, until the last hour minutes or so when, in my view, the totality of the trilogy came crashing to the ground. There is a huge, heated debate about the ending of the game where both sides are calling names like rather ill-behaved children. I do not intend to call names here as games, like movies, are very subjective. However, I do have some thoughts about the ending and the story. If you don’t share these thoughts, great. But don’t be pompous, acting like your opinion is the only one out there. And, beware of spoilers.

//[Work Hard and Still Get the Shaft]//

The first thing that really annoyed me was that I played through every mission/side quest and got most (but admittedly not all) of the war assets from the various worlds using the planet scanner (this also got tedious at times but was nowhere as bad as the scanning in ME2). The way I understand the galactic readiness rating (GRT) is as follows: it is basically a multiplier that takes your raw military strength and is used to produce an effective military strength (EMS). If you spend more time in the multiplayer (which I did not) you can, in principle, spend less time on side quests and vice-versa. Good idea, I thought, as it gives players some leeway on how to proceed.

However, when I went into the final battle, I feel that the EMS rating was rather misleading. Mine was roughly at about 3200 or so with a default GRT of 50%. The green bar was completely filled. However, my ending sucked (I’ll get to this in a minute). In fact, the first time I played through, I was so shocked that I re-loaded the Citadel mission to see if I missed something. Nope, as I feared.

Now, my initial reaction was knee-jerk. I was furious that EA/BioWare made a game where, as I perceived at the time, a decent ending could not be achieved without multiplayer. I have since then been corrected. A decent ending, where Shepard presumably lives (there is still some ambiguity here), can be achieved with an EMS of 4000 or better (at least, according to sites like IGN). However, my complaint is that the game misled me about this as my EMS bar was completely filled going into the last mission. Even if you can get the good ending without playing multiplayer, much of your readiness rating depends on previous choices from earlier titles. Also, admittedly, there is a box that told me that my chances against the Reapers was even but I didn’t think much of it because in Mass Effect 2, they still called it a “suicide mission” even if you made all the necessary preparations.

I should note that the supposed “good” ending includes a very brief cut scene where Shepard is still alive but appears to be in bad shape; I don’t have much of an incentive to work hard to get my EMS up for a 20 second cut scene that leaves some ambiguity about Shepard’s ultimate fate.

//[Past Decisions?]//

I didn’t feel that all of my decisions really mattered. My feeling is that your decisions mattered mainly insofar as a character might briefly appear in the game and promise to help you but you may not ever encounter that character again in the game and a positive number would be tallied, in your favor, to your military strength. So, basically, I feel like I made decisions not to see further development of a character who was willing to fight and, possibly die, along side me but rather, to see a sum magically increase by a few hundred points.

A good example is the Rachni Queen. She appears if you save her and you are again given an option to save or let her die as she has been taken over by Reaper tech. If you let her live, she appears in a list under the war assets and that is that.

The collector base, for example, does play a role in what choices you have in the ending but I didn’t really feel like my decision to destroy it made much of an impact throughout the game. This was, at least I thought, a huge decision and all it does it determine which three crappy choices will cause you to “win” if you even “win” at all. That is, the crappy choices are permuted depending on your choice to destroy or not destroy the collector base.

You also see Major Kirrahe who promises to fight by your side no matter which way the political tide turns. What is frustrating is that I expected a full scale, epic battle where all sorts of people I have rallied were fighting by my side. Literally. I don’t think that this was a wrong or misleading assumption. But this isn’t what I got. Perhaps my expectations here were far too high.

I understand that making a game that is custom tailored to the player is a difficult, technical task but this is how they marketed the game. I remember feeling that my ME1 decisions, with the exception of Wrex, didn’t really have an impact on ME2 except for a few casual encounters with Conrad or an Asari communicating on behalf of the Rachni Queen. I really felt like I would feel the heavy weight of my major decisions from ALL three titles. Instead, there were many times when it felt like “Oh yeah, I remember doing that.” The only decisions that seemed to carry sufficient weight were ones that I made in this particular game.

//[Total Annihilation/Gooification of Humanity Isn't So Bad So Long As it is Justified by a Child]//

The ending didn’t make much sense to me. In fact, I felt like more alcohol would assist me in understanding it. So, to save organics from the hands of super advanced synthetics or AIs we have to brutally destroy entire species with a race of ultra-sophisticated synthetic-organic hybrids? Okay, perhaps “destroy” is a bad word; more like, gooify you and collect you as a museum exhibit of what once was. So, instead of being destroyed in the usual “the machines have revolted” sense, we will be brutally harvested by super advanced machines. Yeah…. that is a great….uh…. solution? Chaos is not necessarily a bad thing; it is found in nature. This was hard to stomach.

In Mass Effect 2, we discovered that the collectors were really Protheans who were re-purposed and it was generally agreed by Shepard and crew that this was a fate far worse than extinction. Why the change of heart? Because the presumably non-caporial being on the Citadel took the form of a child instead of Harbinger, with his guttural, bad guy-ish sounding voice? This child basically told Shepard what Harbinger told Shepard on Virmire and at various spots in Mass Effect 2. Shepard certainly didn’t buy what Harbinger told him in the previous games but now it is okay because a child says it?

Seriously, I would rather fight a loosing battle against machines Terminator 2 style than have my friends and family turned into some goo where they loose all personality but their genetic structure is preserved. Because, you know, as I play, develop relationships, and think long term, my main concern should be…. preserving my bodily fluids? It almost has a Dr. Strangelove tone to it… I’m just imagining Shepard droning on about his precious bodily fluids.

Seriously, this sucked beyond measure. And by beyond measure, I mean it was serious, knee deep, disappointing, suckage. Dying at the hands of the collectors in ME2 was, in my opinion, a far more satisfying ending to the series. Fewer loose ends to tie up (which were not tied up in ME3).

//[But You Can Still "Stop" The Reapers]//

If, by stop, you mean one of three things: you control the reapers, which is very disappointing because it gives the Illusive Man credibility, you combine synthetics and organics which is equally disappointing and, frankly weird as hell, or, as some game sites misreport, you destroy all synthetics, including the Reapers (some game sites report that you just destroy the Reapers). And, unless you worked really hard, Admiral Anderson will die as will Shepard.

Then, in a sudden chance of pace, Joker apparently stops assisting the space attack to go and pick up Ashley, James, and Liara from the ground battle so that when they crash land on some Eden-like planet, there will be enough people to make babies (Note: some things may be different depending on who you saved in ME1, who your squadmates were for the last mission, etc but the idea is the same).

So let’s recap: you either die or, if not, you take a breath of air badly wounded with absolutely no character resolution, you have absolutely no clue what happened to the other characters you have grown to love, and it is very likely that your spouse-to-be (or, at the least, I hoped) will have the task of making babies to repopulate humanity with little to no facial expression that seems to express the slightest bit of concern as to your fate.

I wanted to see total Reaper carnage (as opposed to total AI/synthetic carnage) and maybe a wedding or possibly a scene where you walk away with your friends in the sunset leaving behind a pile of dead reapers (yes, I know, I am a hopeless romantic). Instead, I got no character resolution and a random scene of Joker crashing on a planet that seemed to have little to do with anything.

Some people might contend I am making too much out of nothing. Possibly. But I wouldn’t tolerate this kind of ending in a movie trilogy so why should I tolerate it in a game that is supposed to be story driven?

The suckage is complete and I’m not it sure can be undone. This alone does not make me want to go back and re-play the game. In fact, I would be content to stop playing before the battle of Earth and leave it be or die in ME2. I’m not even sure I can play the other titles knowing what ending lies ahead. The game and the trilogy was great but the ending completely ruined everything for me at this point.

Bottom Line
===========

Gameplay is good and refined. Ending sucks and ruins the trilogy. Even if the ending is bad (I would have preferred a bittersweet ending as mentioned earlier), character resolution is still a part of story telling!

1Unbelievably Disappointing

I want to preface this by saying that I’ve been a huge fan of this series from day one. I really believe that these games are the best anyone has produced in the last five years. For the most part that excellence carries through into the third game. The graphics and sound are still great. The characters you’ve grown to love are all back, most with excellent new chapters to their stories. Combat comes close to perfection and the new score is fantastic. Even the multiplayer is a fun distraction.

When I was about three quarters of the way through the story I was entirely prepared to give this game five stars, minor problems with the side quest structure aside. Around that time I saw that the game had a two star average on Amazon. I knew that people were angry about the day one DLC, and despite my best efforts to avoid spoilers I had heard some grumbling about the ending. But the ending couldn’t be bad enough to justify a two star rating for an otherwise outstanding game, right? Right?

Wrong. Very, very wrong. As one professional reviewer (writing for the California Literary Review) put it, “the ending, by which I mean the final five to ten minutes, of Mass Effect 3 is easily the worst finale I’ve seen compared to the preceding quality that came before it – in any medium. At literally every level, it’s objectively terrible.” It’s honestly hard to believe that it was written by the same people that developed the rest of the series. Some have tried to dismiss complaints about the ending as the whining of entitled fans who wanted a happy ending. I promise you it isn’t that simple. Let me explain why this goes beyond players’ preferences as to how the story should wrap up.

***SPOILERS TO FOLLOW***

First off, there are plot-holes galore. Huge gaping plot-holes. Squad mates who were with you on Earth magically appearing back on the Normandy. Joker randomly deciding to flee before the Crucible even goes off. Anderson saying he’s behind you then magically appearing in the room ahead of you. The Illusive Man appearing on the Citadel with no explanation. Etc.

Secondly, there is a complete lack of choice as to how the game ends. Nothing you’ve done in the previous 120 hours has any bearing on the options available to you in the end. Nothing. Your choices did not matter at all. No matter what you did you are offered three choices as to how to finish off the Reapers. They sound different, but the only difference between the three endings is that you get to watch a different colored explosion. Really, that’s it. In a series that was all about real choices with real consequences this is completely unacceptable.

Thirdly, you get no sense of closure. You watch the Reaper attack end, the Mass Relays blow up, the Normandy crash land on a planet, and possibly Shepard draw a breath, proving that he lives. Roll credits. What? Are you kidding me? Is my crew just going to die on that planet? Will Shepard ever see his love interest again? What will happen to Galactic civilization without the Mass Relays? Are all the peaces I brokered between the different races meaningless now that they’re never going to see each other again? (In this way choices you made hours ago are completely negated.) What about that giant fleet that gathered at earth and is now stuck there? Are they just going to starve to death? I have no idea what the future holds for all the characters I’ve come to care so much about.

Fourth, and perhaps most importantly, the ending goes completely against everything the rest of the series has stood for. For three games Shepard has been running around trying to convince everyone to work together against a common enemy. He has forged deep friendships with members of every species and solved centuries old conflicts (including, importantly, that between the Geth and the Quarians). They drive home the point that the Protheans were doomed by their homogeneity and that this cycle has a better chance because it consists of diverse races working together. Peaceful coexistence and cooperation are encouraged again and again and again.

Then Shepard reaches the the Crucible and the Starchild says that war between synthetics and organics is inevitable. You have three choices for how to deal with this: genocide (kill all synthetics, including friendly ones, [red]), slavery (take control of the Reapers, [blue]), homogenization (merge all synthetic and organic life [green]). Shepard responds by fighting back and saying that there must be another way. His presence there is proof that cooperation is possible. He demands another solution that doesn’t involve destroying the Mass Relays or synthetic allies like EDI and the Geth. Oh wait, that’s not what he does at all. HE JUST GOES ALONG WITH IT AND PICKS ONE OF THE THREE AWFUL CHOICES. Are you @#$*ing kidding me Bioware? After all that Shepard just abandons everything he believes in without a fight and picks a color coded ending? This is about as believable as your whole crew suddenly turning into cowards and running away before the fight ends.

Finally, the (only) ending is incredibly negative and depressing. If you want to say that I’m whiny and want an ending that’s full of rainbows and unicorns and ice cream, fine, but hear me out. First consider how bleak the existing ending really is. The Mass Relays are gone. The civilization that you’ve come to know is torn apart completely. All the races you’ve just united really aren’t going to interact anymore. The giant fleet hanging over the smoking ruin that was earth has no way to get home. Are they just going to starve to death? Where the hell is your squad? Will they ever get off that jungle planet? Are Tali and Garrus just going to starve to death (they can’t eat the same food as us, remember)? We’re left with small numbers of survivors cut off from each other on ruined planets. Call me crazy, but I don’t think this is much better than letting the damn Reapers win.

I don’t object to the fact that this ending is possible. I object to the fact that its the only ending possible. As I’ve said, choice is a huge part of this series. If you did things a certain way in ME 1 you could convince the final boss to shoot himself in the head. If you were adequately prepared in ME 2 you could have a 100% survival rate on a “suicide mission.” If I’ve been a solid paragon and completed every side mission for three games straight (which I did) I want the possibility of a happy ending. Screw this “the hero has to die” nonsense. This is Mass Effect! The hero doesn’t “have to” anything! I want endings that differ in respects other than color of explosions, and I want at least one of them to be somewhat happy.

I can’t see how anyone at Bioware thought that this ending was a good idea. It’s so bad that it degrades everything that comes before it. I have no motivation to play this game again, or the earlier ones for that matter, simply because I know what they lead to. I’ve honestly been kind of depressed since I finished the game a few days ago. I desperately want a rewritten ending, and I may have to part ways with my favorite developer if I don’t get one. It’s really that mind-blowingly bad. Bad enough to overshadow everything else in an otherwise superb game.

NOTE: Yes, the single star is a protest vote. Go ahead and buy the game. For most of it’s run it’s just as brilliant as the first two. Just don’t expect to feel satisfied when the credits roll.

1An epic fail

The ending sucks, that much is a given. But I have to say this game fails on more levels then just the ending. To start with there are the mindless fetch quests. These quests boil down to: go to star system, press the right trigger a few times, scan planet, run away from reapers, rinse/repeat. These quests give you items which you either turn into a random npc on the citadel or count towards your arbitrary EMS number. How do you get these quests you ask? Well you run around the citadel and when you get close to an npc you are given the quest, there is no dialouge to it. You just over hear an npc and bam you got the quest. You do not even have to stick around to hear the whole of the text just run by and you got the quest. This is just pure laziness.

The next thing is the quest journal, its called a journal but its really just a list. This list gives a vague idea of where to go for the fetch quests, but it does not update when you finish the first part of the quest nor does it tell you where to go to turn it in. This is an overhaul of the first 2 games journal and it fails miserably.

Next up are the N7 missions, these quests are all just a rehash of a multiplayer map scaled down for single player. There is no inventiveness to it. Show up on planet kill bad guys rinse and repeat. They add nothing to the overall game just a few more points towards the EMS number, that means almost nothing in the grand scheme of things.

After that there is the lack of dialogue choices in conversations. Most conversations are now just the player eves dropping on crew mates or random npc’s on the citadel. When the dialogue wheel does actually show up the players options are now limited to 2 choices pragon/renegade, there are no neutral options, and its fairly rare for there to be any options on the left side of the wheel so that the player can continue the conversation further and ask questions.

Next is the fact that Multiplayer effects Single Player. I do not play online, I just won’t. But in order to get a full EMS bar I have to play multiplayer, there is no way for a person who has no internet connection to raise the bar to full. No extra side quests that will raise galactic readiness, just multiplayer. There is an Android app a user can play to raise Galactic Readiness, except I dont own an Android and my 360 has no internet connection. So apparently I am not cool enough for Bioware to allow me to achieve full Galactic Readiness. That just sucks.

Next is the fact the Bioware shipped this game with a feature broken. The User can no longer import their characters face from ME2. The file is tranfered but the face is not imported. For some people this was not that big of an issue. For myself it started my ME3 play through on a serious down note. Not having my characters face was a big let down for me.

Then there is the day one DLC. I like DLC but if its ready before launch and can still be included on the disc, the developer should include it in the game. Not milk me for every last dime. This is a problem through out the title. The Multiplayer relies on micro transactions for upgraded gear, there is the option to grind it out, but we all know most folks will take the fast route and pay a couple bucks for the packs. Signs of avarice run rampant through out this game.

I had high hopes for ME3 and there are some good scripted moments through out the game. But all of that is for naught when the final product is so shallow. The makers of this game should be ashamed of themselves and held up as a cautionary tale to other dev teams in the industry. It is fairly obvious that this game was under a hard and fast deadline which could not be missed for any reason. It was rushed out the door and serves only to feed EA/Bioware’s bottom line. There is not craft to it, and I don’t think there was very much love put into this game. It is a weak end to a fantastic series. This series could have been the greatest feat of story telling in video game since Shadow of the Colossus. Instead is is a monument to greed and the dumbing down of video games, as well it is the final nail in the coffin of Bioware’s reputation of being the best RPG company in the industry.

4delivers what it promises

Ok, this game definitely has a target demographic. For you to find this review helpful, you probably should fall into most of these categories:

-You like LONG games (50 hrs minimum)
-You like STRATEGY RPGs (moving around on squares, turn-based)
-You like JAPANESE RPGs (anime style)
-You like JAPANESE styled stories (sometimes corny, slighty perverted romance-type)
-You DONT ABSOLUTELY NEED English dialogue (its all japanese, subtitled)
-You like VARYING ENDINGS based on your decisions throughout the game

Alright. So if you satisfy 4 of those traits, you don’t want to miss this game.

Before getting into the specifics of the game, I’ll say that Xbox360 doesnt have enough RPGs in the first place, so if you are like me, you will feel like you HAVE to at least try it. I don’t think you will be dissappointed in most cases.

GRAPHICS/AUDIO/ETC
It’s all anime style drawings. The graphics aren’t impressive. The audio isn’t impressive. It’s all gameplay focused, and looks like you are basically playing Final Fantasy Tactics on a nintendo DS. The ‘cutscences’ are basically just a visual novel. You have to read a bunch to get the story.

THE STORY
It is what you expect from a Japanese RPG. One defining factor, though, is that you aren’t the same hero the entire game. The story spans over several generations. Each new generation present a new hero. He is NOT the same guy as the previous one. You will like some of them and you won’t like others. The story is DEFINITELY good enough for most people to get over the fact that its all text instead of cutscenes.

I am the kind of guy who hates the play through a game twice. I pretty much lose enough interest to play another 40 hours if I already know the story. But there is even enough variety in this game’s story for me to play again. Thats saying alot for me.

Overall, you have to like the Japanese tyle of storytelling to really get into it. As long as you aren’t taking it too seriously, you will love it.

THE BATTLE SYSTEM
With enemies constantly changing from area to area, the battle system delivers the diversity necessary to play a game for 100 hours. STRATEGY is extremely important, more so than brute strength. This is a very good thing, as it eliminates the necessity to grind levels before moving on. You can grind if you want to, and end up powering through your next few enemies, but it isnt at all necessary on easy or normal difficulty. That is even more important, for reasons I will get to later.

Basically, you are on a big field of squares, where you use action points(AP) to move and attack. Each turn is divided into a movement stage and an action stage. You have to use AP to move, and to perform attack skills. The amount of AP a character has is determined by their agility, weapons, armor, *and* the location of their teammates. Each character has a unique set of “extended areas,” which give them more AP if one of their teammates is located in them. It is the main reason you must strateically think out every movement you make. In addition, you can do combination attacks with the teammates that are in your extended area. These are the most important attacks, and are absolutely necessary to defeat powerful enemies. In some cases, you will have to risk recieving greater damage by turning your back on the enemy in order to link up with your teammates. All things must be considered.

Throughout the game, you will even uncover new battle formations and fields, allowing you to choose a differently-shaped ‘field of squares’ that best compliments your battle style.

Overall, if you appreciate the strategic elements of the battle system, and don’t mind that it looks so old-school, you will never get bored with the fighting.

THE OVERALL GAME SYSTEM
Your decisions are important. Some decisions that dont seem important end up affecting you later in the game in ways you didn’t expect. You can make decisions that move you between the “dark” and “light” side of the guage. Unfortunately, sometimes you cant really tell which way a decision will send you. There are even some decisions that you must make during actual battles, such as not attacking a certain person. I did not fully comprehend the consequences of alot of actions until it was too late, but that is a good sign that you have to be thinking about more than battles to get the results you want.

Your actions affect how the female characters in the game like you. This is important because at the end of every generation, you have to choose a bride to make the hero of the next generation! You will choose your bride based on her strengths and yours, and that will determin the strength of the next hero. So if you like to use physical attacks, it is better for you to do the things the more physical heroine likes. If you want a magic user, then you need to get on the good side of the more mage-like females. It is more in-depth than it seems: That bride’s level of affection for you also determines how strong the next hero will be, so you can’t just ride the middle fence the whole time, or your son will not be as powerful.

Each generation, you have 3 brides to choose from, leading to 3 different next-generation heroes. The bride from the 1st generation, though, also affects your options for EVERY generation after that. The variety of possible end-game heroes, therefore, is unprecedented.

Throughout the game, you collect items, weapons, armor, and even monsters that can be upgraded, augmented, and converted into new items, with which you can create more powerful ones. The amount of customization in this game is impressive.

Back to the grinding issue. Every battle and even in the story consumes “1 turn.” The game keeps track of how many turns you use. If you spend a bunch of turns grinding levels, you will miss some big events, and eventually change the ending of the entire game! Getting to a certain point in the game too late may cause you to miss a new partner, or a variety of other events. If you skip too many optional battles, you will find yourself underpowered in the next boss battle, or you may miss some powerful items. You have to consider all of these things with every move you make.

The story is not presented in a very interesting way. Basically, you just move from battle to battle, with various events mixed in between.

It’s a stragy game, and RPG, a great story, and partially a dating sim. None of these elements are ground-breaking in themselves. But when you combine all of them in this manner, you have something that hasn’t quite been achieved before.

THE GOOD
-Strategy based battles emphasize your decision-making instead of brute strength. (no grinding required)
-Decision system makes your decisions from every generation important for the entire game
-Immersive storyline holds the player’s interest for the duration, and is interesting enough to play through multiple times
-HP is restored after battles, preventing the need to use recovery items outside of battle
-Plenty of different characters to team up with, allowing you to choose how to fight your battles

THE BAD
-All japanese dialogue, and no subtitles during battles. Archaic system of story-telling that you expect more on a handheld game without cutscenes.
-Sometimes hard to figure out whether your choice is going to be considered ‘dark’ or ‘light’
-Characters have limited amount of slots to assign skills to, causing you to use the same attacks over and over again.
-Graphics and audio quality are mediocre compared to the console games of this era
-Relatively limited selection of the most powerful move combinations in battle

CONCLUSION
This is a game that requires alot of strategic thought and patience. And there is no focus on impressive visual/audio effects. You definitely have to really commit to playing it, but if you do, you WILL NOT be dissapointed. You will be immersed, challeged, and satisfied.

4Strong appeal for niche audience

Although you most certainly will need to be the kind of gamer this game panders to, if you are the target audience you’re very likely to enjoy Agarest War. If you’re a fan of tactical RPGs like Disgaea, there is a strong chance you will enjoy Agarest War. I also enjoy the “dating sim” aspects, even though they are just as cliched as you might expect if you’ve played visual novels before.

Graphically this game will not impress many people; it could have been done on the PS2. The music is enjoyable but so far (about a third into the game) not very memorable. Load times seem to be about twice as long as they should be, especially when entering a battle. This doesn’t frustrate me much personally as you spend so much time *in* battle rather than waiting on it.

Sound unimpressive? Then you probably don’t see the appeal of these kinds of games. The tactical battle system is deep, challenging and rewarding to learn and master. Character leveling and equipment is branching, complex and customizable. There is surprisingly little necessary grinding (although you can grind to your heart’s content if you want). The story is well-translated, which preserves the enjoyable and fast-paced narrative. The professional translation helps the visual novel aspects stand up well to localization which is often a huge hurdle. I especially like how your choices affect each generation of characters. A player could spend months, even years, “completing” this game.

If you’re looking for the next AAA hit from Bioware…well, Mass Effect 3 is around the corner. However, if you love long, detailed and addictive tactical RPGs and visual novels that don’t take themselves too seriously, this is a game you really need to pick up; it’s worth your time and your money.

3if you like turn based, this is still a tricky game to reccommend

I dont mind the old school 2D sprites or the PS2-level battle graphics. Not a big deal. I also dont mind grinding for XP. But the combat is not that interesting ultimately. After some playtime, you will find that character leveling is slow (basically your characters are as good as their equipment in this game). Even that might be OK but the combat is on a 2D grid in which things like elevation and terrain do no matter at all. So it is a pretty basic implementation of turn based. What is cool is that everyone moves around on the playfield before every turn and this creates some interesting tactics. It is not enough though for hundreds and hundreds (no exaggeration) of battles needed to complete the game. Some will still love it, but there wasnt enough there for me in the combat to keep playing.

5Best Turtle Beach Ear Force Yet

I started out the X4′s, then the X41′s. So two years of better gaming. Both were great for many reasons. I even thought they were perfect. Now owning the PX5′s for a week, it makes the other ones I have owned seem flawed. They really did justice to the PX5. Cable fits more snug to the Xbox controller, the volume control has a better range, and interference is little to none with the PX5. And even though the sound on the X41 is outstanding, the sound on the PX5 is even better.

If you have the money or can scrape up the money and you play a lot of MP type games, you really need a good headset to step up your game. Being able to know someone is coming, how close the might be, and what direction they are coming from really helps. Even if you just play on campaigns, these headsets really help to immerse yourself into the game’s environment.

The biggest plus with any headset for speakers is being able to play games loudly without keeping everyone else awake. More importantly, if you play games that has harsh language and you have kids, then you keep them from accidentally hearing it.

UPDATE 4/13/2011

Well, a few weeks of use now. I use them with the 360 and so far, I am averaging 10 to 12 hours of use before replacing the batteries. I use rechargeable NiMH batteries. The best feature they added to this headset, that the other models did not have, is they finally give you a warning your batteries are about to die.

The sound is still great. I have tried the various presets and they really help depending on what type of game you play. Still highly recommended.

3I’ve had them all, and I’m keeping this one… Ahem.. Sort of.

I’ve had the Triton AxPro, X41, X31, Astro, and now the PX5.(All from Amazon, which was awesome this time as always) These are the best sounding by a landslide. Why the 4 star rating? Well, until I can customize my mic settings and edit my audio presets, and change “the voice” (yes, the headphones talk)… I can only rate it four stars. 5 is perfect. These are not. I facebooked TurtleBeach and asked whats up with the software that the manual and box say is on their website. “It isn’t up there yet, it will be in a couple of days”. Furthermore, that same manual makes mention of a Bluetooth adapter for the 360 controller for complete wireless chat… Also absent from their website. So those are the shortcomings for now. I hope the website is updated within 27 days, if not I will have to return these as they are only half what the box says they are. No editing mic levels, no voice morph, no custom presets, and no Bluetooth dongle.

All that said, they are awesome. Switching from Pandora on iPhone 4 to Black Ops is effortless. In fact they can be done at the same time! And I’ve named “her” Barbra. She tells me where we are in the presets: 1 … 2 … 3 and so on, or “Bluetooth on” or “Headset pairing”. They are really quite amazing. The distance is larger from base to head as well. I can clearly hear BLOPS in the bathroom for those 1 minute breaks- whereas with the x41 I was constantly met with signal loss. When these do lose signal, the transition is MUCH less jarring. The game sounds simply cut in and out until they are gone all together. They fade back in the same way. Lastly, not one pop, absolutely no hiss, not one crackle in range. The only audio flaw is that when “she” says “Bluetooth powering off” the “…off” fades out a bit. Those other things missing are icing on the cake. But the cake cost 250$ and I don’t like cake without icing. Hopefully an update will follow, that is positive.

FOLLOW UP:

I had to return the headset to Amazon. Booooo. Yes, there is some software on TB website. As kitschy as a “voice morph” is… It simply doesn’t warrant a 250$ price tag. The actual “real” software is still absent from their website (Whatever “Coming Soon” means). I want to adjust, at the very least, some generic “bass” setting or tinker with a “treble” slider. In addition to that flagrant faux pas, there is no Bluetooth dongle to be had for us 360 exclusive gamers. BOTH of these items are listed IN THE MANUAL and in the description of their product on their own site! This is not to diminish the quality of either the build or the sound. Both are superior to their the X41 model. But not for almost double the cost. Until the price comes down, and/or these other two items are available… I will not recommend this product. Continue to enjoy the X41. In fact, buy two and let the wife enjoy some quality sounds while gaming or watching a flick or two. I do miss these cans, but I not as much as I missed the $$$. I hope to update again soon. I also hope I can do more than be blinded by their beauty and gush over their sound. Maybe I could even review this elusive software, and even more mysterious Bluetooth dongle. By then, I bet they are at least 50$ cheaper too. Which in turn will likely pay for a portion of the sure-to-be over priced dongle.

Also, I don’t care to be involved in the flame debate below… Nothing personal, I’d just rather be playing video games… Or eating broken glass.

Second Follow Up:

As of late July 2011 the software is up on TB website. I will review them again once the Bluetooth adapter is available… Maybe. Or I’ll just get the Xbox version of the PX5, to be released “soon”.

4After Hrs of Research/Reading, These were the GAMING headsets for me!

The Turtle Beach’s PX5s are here to replace its predecessor – the X41s.
My best friend had those headphones but returned them because of this hissing, cracking sound that was god awful. However, TB has rid of this problem as it is no longer happening in the PX5s. THIS IS HUGE. If you do your research you will see a plethora of complaints about the X41s having this issue.

Further, if you are really into FPS games such as killzone, COD, BFBC2 etc, then you will appreciate some of the presets such as silent footsteps; some presets really immerse you in the game. Some ppl speculated that the presets may just be a gimmick or ploy from TB but INDEED THEY ARE NOT AND THEY WORK.

NOTE: Make sure to use ninjo pro on BO to really get the advantage or else you will end up hearing the sound of YOUR OWN footsteps, which is not desirable.

Lastly, you should know that MLG recommends the ASTRO A40s, which are also awesome but come with an even heftier price tag of 350+[(when you include the wireless option. Of course, these are wireless and have more features (voice changer, downloading more presets, comes with DUAL bluetooth capabilities which is something that you CANNOT get on the astros)]. The latter feature helps a lot since my gf likes to bother me while I’m gaming and my Android can be answered by a click of a button through the PX5s; pretty cool, eh?!
Also it is helpful for you to know that the Astros are known for really good Ambient sound and Narration. Also, the astros made an improvement with their 2011 edition giving better bass containment then they offered before. The px5 don’t have a bass booster toggle like the x41s, however, this is no longer a single-option-feature since the presets coupled with the ability to self adjust/customize the sound at an even greater depth is ALL at the user’s fingertips.

The Px5 are probably the most advance and best WIRELESS GAMING headsets you can get on the market right now and with amazon’s superb CSRs and pricing, you can’t go wrong.

PS please don’t bother comparing these to the Tritton Pros and/or the 720s – it really undermines the Px5s, they are not in the same league.

Update 4/1/2011

After muh more use and playing around with the headsets, I decided to give an update. Honestly, I have a issue with the lack of proper bass; that is there is not a fair balance of adequate/tight/clean bass – ESPECIALLY is you are on preset 2 or 4. If someone throws a grenade and it lands by me or if there of many sounds going on out once, there is CONSIDERABLE distortion. This is not acceptable for such an expensive headset. So yeah, it has a multitude of features, but what is the point if you are not getting quality sound. Aside from that, the mids and highs are pretty good.

Here is what I wrote in response to a comment: “Now honestly, these are not going to sound as good as the 598s, or 555, the guy who has some distortion in the bass does not have a defective product, it’s just like someone said here, these aren’t going to be comparable to HD cans from a company like Senn,denon, etc. I swear they sound pretty good and I enjoy them but of course they are not up to par with some of the foregoing headsets mentioned above. Do they blow the Tritton 720/pros (crap madCatz) and px21s out of the water? Yes! But don’t plan on getting the best GAMING headphones (on balance) and expect sound quality which you would receive from a similar priced audiophile company…it aint gonna’ happen (at least not right now)”

OH and ONE LAST THING, to the guy who said he got 20hrs plus, YEAH RIGHT. That is NOT true unless you have the mic and bluetooth off. Sorry. Just had to clarify for everyone. It is entirely feasible and average for 6 hrs use if the bluetooth function is on all the time bc boy does that sure drain the batt.
